2014 Poetry Contest Winner: Untitled Poem by Emma F.
Once upon a time my mind controlled for me, It ruled me from within and told me who to be, It tried to tear away my dreams and tried to make me fall, I never saw the sun through its darkened iron wall, I stayed there in its lonely cage, For too long to keep track the days, I became a stranger to myself, I ruled my life no more, The kingdom of my mind had a new king on the floor, The mirror only proved to me what I already knew, That I abandoned my own family, away from them I flew, When all they every did was try and keep me from the fray, I was ashamed look around see I pushed them all away, I wiped away my memories and turned in all my dreams, To the monsters who then claimed me and sewed up all my seams, To turn me into one of them was just a piece of their big plans, I was too naive to notice the changing of the sands, The tables had been turned on me, the games had just begun, But sadly, I knew somehow that they already won, Every part I gave away they made my spirit whole, But the monsters roared with laughter and kept away my soul, I played their silly game awhile till fate called out to me, And told me what I had to do in order to be free,
It said, Don't worry about tomorrow, just worry about today, it's who you are inside that matters, no matter what they say, I hope that you remember no matter what comes your way, Reality may hold you and tell you who to be, Reality may hold you and tell you who to be, but imagination rules the world and flies forever free.
